HP and Microsoft have inked a deal to provide four new business appliances in 2011. They've announced the first two  -- the HP Business Decision Appliance and the HP E5000 Messaging System for Microsoft Exchange Server. Both appliances are part of a growing portfolio to provide database consolidation, reduced IT complexity, messaging and more, according to the companies. The new portfolio, comprised of HP hardware running Microsoft applications, is set to "fuse applications, infrastructure and productivity tools into a single system," according to the release announcing the products. Through these appliances, HP and Microsoft have created a turnkey offering that enables IT administrators to deploy business applications in hours rather than weeks.

Here are the specs for the two new offerings:

The HP Business Decision Appliance (available now):
  • Preintegrated business intelligent services
  • Preintegrated productivity tools
  • Microsoft SQL Server and SharePoint can be configured in less than an hour
HP E5000 Messaging System for Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 (coming soon):
  • Designed to provide enterprise-class messaging for businesses of all sizes
  • A self-contained unit that can be deployed in a few hours
  • Large mailboxes at low cost
  • Centralized archiving
  • Easily scalable as business grows

While these appliances are good for quick deployments of critical business applications, VARs may feel the pinch in the reduction in services and maintenance revenue normally associated with these apps. MSPs, however, could use the appliances to their advantage, offering the business intelligence they provide while reducing their own internal services and maintenance. And for VARs that don't provide services and maintenance, the (apparent) ease of deployment should be a plus for customers who require something that's both 'good' and 'fast' at the same time.

HP and HP/Microsoft Frontline channel partners can get at the HP Business Decision Appliance for about $28,000 list-price with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 and Microsoft SharePoint 2010 licensed separately. The E5000 system is available to channel partners at $36,000 list-price with Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 also licensed separately.
